Misunderstandings about Children's Myopia

Once a child's vision decreases, parents will inquire multiple times in the hope of finding a cure for myopia, but often fall into some misconceptions.

1、 Glasses cannot be worn, they will get deeper and deeper!

This is the most widely circulated misconception! Wearing glasses will not increase myopia! Not wearing glasses is even more harmful!

Parents who often encounter many nearsighted children are unwilling to let their children wear glasses, and always feel that wearing glasses will increase the degree of myopia. In fact, the occurrence of myopia is the result of an extension of the eye axis (anterior and posterior diameter of the eyeball). Wearing glasses is to correct myopia, and wearing the correct glasses itself will not lead to myopia. Appropriate glasses of appropriate degree can also effectively prevent the deepening of myopia.

2、 Wearing glasses can cause eye deformation

Actually, wearing glasses does not cause eye deformation! Eyes becoming convex is the result of rapid growth of myopia and axial growth, and the eyes seen through myopia glasses (concave lenses) are reduced by the lens frame. Removing the glasses can cause visual errors. So, it's not because wearing glasses causes deformation, but because the structure of the myopia itself changes, causing the eyes to "bulge".

3、 Myopia can be treated

Myopia can only be controlled, not treated!

Many non-medical institutions or informal medical institutions take advantage of the parents' psychology of not wanting their children to wear glasses to carry out various myopia "treatments", saying that myopia can be reduced through treatment (acupuncture and moxibustion, massage), or even glasses can be removed. Some massage, acupuncture and moxibustion, physiotherapy, therapeutic apparatus and other methods are actually ineffective. Myopia cannot be treated at present, and only limited means such as corneal shaping lenses and wearing appropriate glasses can delay the development of myopia.
