How To Prevent Cataract In Old Age
The lens in the eyeball becomes cloudy, from transparent to opaque, blocking
lights into eyes and affecting vision, which is called cataract. In the
beginning, slight turbidity won’t affect vision, and then gradually get worse
and cause complications such as glaucoma or phacoanaphylactic endophthalmitis,
finally it will affect vision or even cause blindness.
Cataracts have two types: congenital and acquired. The most common
is senile cataract. People will develop cataract around 50 years old, caused by
lens degeneration. Both eyes can have this disease successively or at the same
time. Cataract existing after birth or in childhood is called congenital
cataract. Ocular opacity caused by eye trauma is called traumatic cataract. Diabetes
and insufficient parathyroid function can cause metabolic cataracts. Diseases
such as inflammation and bleeding in the eye can cause concurrent cataracts.
To prevent it, old people should take following steps.
1. Keep good and comfortable moods and avoid
violent mood swings.
2. Quit smoking early. Experiments have
shown smokers have more chance to develop cataract.
3. Pay attention to eye hygiene and keep
good eye habits. Do not use your eyes too long, pay attention to combination of
work and rest. Ocular tissue of the elderly have lower resistance to infection,
you should timely prevent and treat eye infections. Bacterial and viral
infections occur easily in autumn. If not treated in time, it will cause vision
loss.
4. Pay attention to the proper light. Too
strong light and too weak light can cause eye fatigue too. Ultraviolet light is
easy to damage eyesight, so you must prevent direct sunlight and protect your
eyes as much as possible when you go out. You can wear dark glasses or sun hats
when you go out to avoid eye damage.
5. Elderly people with cataracts should
avoid smoking, alcohol and spicy and greasy food. To prevent increasing
intraocular tension, you should eat more foods rich in vitamin E and vitamin B1,
such as egg yolk, vegetable oil, soybean, lean pork and other food. Increase
vitamin C intake, such as lemon, orange, apple, cherry, kiwi, spinach,
broccoli, cabbage, etc.
6. Replenish water in time. If the body lacks water,
normal metabolism will be disordered, which will cause some chemicals damaged
the lens and caused or aggravated cataracts.
