1. In 1960, Otto Wichterle of the Czech Republic discovered that the polymer of POLY HEMA was hydrophilic, and it was very comfortable to wear on the eyes before it began to be used clinically.
2. Advantages of contact lenses (1) Eliminate the effect of prism: the higher the degree of lens, the greater the effect of prism. Because the contact lenses move with the eyeballs, the center shift of the binocular contact lenses is small, which can avoid the interference of the prism. (2) Elimination of oblique astigmatism: When wearing ordinary glasses, because the eyeball rotates behind the lens, sometimes the degree of the peripheral part of the glasses is applied, which affects the refractive correction and produces oblique astigmatism. The contact lens moves with the eyeball, the center shift is less, and there is basically no oblique astigmatism. (3) Reducing binocular retinal aberration: For patients with anisometropia whose diopters differ greatly, it is difficult to fuse due to the magnification and reduction effect of the lens. The closer the lens is to the eyeball, the smaller the magnification and reduction ratio. Wearing contact lenses can basically restore the fusion function of the eyes and ensure binocular single vision.
3. Disadvantages of contact lenses Some discomfort after wearing the lenses; it is troublesome to take and wear; uncooperative children, those with decreased corneal perception, outdoor workers, and those with poor working environment should not wear them; related complications may occur.
