Will Eyes Really Be Deformed And Exophthalmos After Wearing Glasses For A Long Time?

Many people think eyes will be deformed after wearing glasses for a long time. Is it true ?

We need to know what exophthalmos is firstly.

Exophthalmos means that the eyeball moves forward and protrudes out of the orbit on the basis of the normal position.

There are four common reasons caused exophthalmos:

1. Abnormal thyroid function leads to edema and lymphatic infiltration of the orbital tissue causing unilateral or bilateral exophthalmos

2. Pulsating exophthalmos caused by arteriovenous tumors of internal carotid artery and cavernous sinus

3. Chronic exophthalmos caused by orbital tumors

4. Exophthalmos caused by high myopia

From these reasons, it is not difficult to see that eye deformation and protrusion is not caused by wearing glasses. Only high myopia can cause exophthalmos after excluding systemic and ocular organic diseases. So why do people have deep-rooted thinking that wearing glasses will cause eye distortion and prominent eyeballs?

In fact, there are two reasons caused this kind of misunderstanding:

1. Eye axis growth caused by high myopia itself. The normal axial length of the human eye is about 24mm. Generally speaking, for every 1mm increase in the axis of the eye, the degree of myopia increases by about 3.00D (300 degrees), and the high degree of myopia usually is above 600 degrees, and the axis of the eye will be higher than that of normal people. The eye axis is obviously enlarged, so it will cause the appearance of the eyeball protruding outward. Therefore, the exophthalmos is not caused by wearing glasses for a long time, but caused by the abnormal growth of the axis of the eyes with high myopia;

2. This is an optical illusion. We all know that myopia glasses are concave lenses, and the concave lens will present a reduced image. Through the myopia glasses, we can see that the wearer’s eyes are reduced; when taking off the glasses, it will suddenly form a visual illusion that is larger than the original one. The big optical illusion makes us mistakenly think eyes are protruding

So when children are with true myopia, parents shouldn’t refuse to let children wear glasses, because scientifically wearing of glasses is very important to control myopia. You must go to a regular hospital for standardized optometry or orthokeratology so that children won’t avoid missing the best correction intervention stage.
